Interesting time devices
Beholding the Big Bang, Arthur Ganson
- i really like how simply this device made unfathomable time visible and structurally undeniable, as a mechanical fact
- love the comments on the video
Related to an earlier work Machine with Concrete, the motor drives a series gears designed to reduce its input speed such that it will take 13.7 billion years to turn the final gear in the train, embedded in a concrete block, once. This is the estimated age of the universe. (At the moment of construction. The estimate is always changing!)
This piece is currently on exhibit at the MIT Museum in Cambridge, MA
Backward clock story, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, David Fincher
- one of my favorite films, I love how time plays a role in the narrative that keeps Benjamin always out of sync except for just once
- backward clock as the idea of a time device helps us mourning
La Jetée, Chris Marker, 1962
<vimeo>658254211</vimeo>
- almost entire film is made of still images and narration.
- it's not exactly time device, the film doesnt operate time as a machine
- → but withint the sequence and gaps between the 'remembered' images, time travels through a form of memory
- ↳ the memory in this narrative is not just recalling, it becomes some kind of passage that lets audience cross over time
- ↳ the structure of sensorial recollection functions like a time device
- ↳ the memory in this narrative is not just recalling, it becomes some kind of passage that lets audience cross over time
- unlike time device that measures or trace time through mechanical or external way, the narrative here present time through the internal, sensorial and psychological structure of human mind.
- → memory, image, and inner sensation can function as time device
