What's it going to be

1. a time device that breaks with both linear and progressive models of time.
2.

"Time device"?

  • device that measures time
  • device that structures a certain flow or rhythm of time
  • device that remembers or stores the flow of time

Ideas

Memory as mechanism

("Memory" as in cognitive perspective)

Non-linearity

Memory is interesting because it can disorient/disrupt the experience of linear time.
Frameworks of modernity often percieve time as linear, moving in one direction[past-present-future]. but memory disrupt this continuity by bringing the past into the present. sometimes it changes how we interpret the present moment and in doing so, influencing the future perception as well.

→ like trauma, flashbakcs, recollections for example, can interrupt the flow of present experience and sometimes it feels as if it's happening again right now.
↳ maybe it's more accurate to say past experiences intrude or overlap with current experience.

Repeating time
--mutably and recursivly

We don't just store memory and leave it alone. everytime we remember something, it can change a bit.
Memory let us repeat or replay time like playing a scene over and over but not like in a machinic loop. each time we remember, memory re-writes little differently.

+ false memory

I've had some false memories before-- like remembering a super fun phone conversation about dinosaurs with my sister whcih never actually happened. Or remembering an event as something as if I experienced it myself but later I found out I just saw it on tv.

I think I experienced false memory most frequently during the pandemic lockdown.
it was the time I didn;t really had much sensorial input from the outside world, maybe that has something to do with it?

Flowchart as temporal interface

can flowchart be a time device?

The Art of Asking Your Boss, Georges Perec

can a flowchart be redesigned as an interface for some kind of memory reconstruction?

accepting the non-linear structure of memory, could flowchart be adapted to reflect its recursive, mutable, shifting structure?
↳ like an interface that changes itself based on memory recall...?

Research

Terminal

“The terminal is a command-line interface(CLI) That allows users to interact with a computer’s operating system by executing text-based commands. Commands are executed sequentially and often logged with timestamps, making the progression of system time visible. The terminal also includes tools that interact directly with time, such as querying the current time, modifying timestamped logs, scheduling future tasks, and analyzing historical system activity.”

Deep Time

Wikipedia definition:

Deep time is the concept of geological time that spans billions of years, far beyond the scale of human experience. It provides the temporal framework for understanding the formation and evolution of Earth, the development of life, and the slow-moving processes that shape planetary change.

Data Extractivism

APC definition:

The massive extraction of user data by private companies such as Meta, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, often without appropriate privacy checks and protocols. This collection of data – a form of surveillance capitalism similar to the extraction of raw materials and exploitation of labour in colonised territories in the global South that enriched states and companies based in the north – is then used to sell content and advertising back to users, crippling the openness of the internet and its usefulness for building democracy and social justice. APC's concern with extractivism extends to all forms of the extractive economy that operates in the production and use of ICTs(Information and Communications Technology), including the extraction of raw materials and the impact of this on local communities.
